Training, development and reward
Our career structure and culture allow staff to progress quickly to senior positions. Reflecting the diverse nature of our work, there is a wide range of different career paths you can follow to reach the very top of the organisation. We believe in giving you early responsibility to stretch and challenge you in whichever area of competence you are working. We do not have a time-served mentality; progression is based entirely upon performance.
To recognise the breadth of roles staff undertake we have developed a structured approach to career development that is shared by all consultants, no matter which profession they work in. This allows you to very clearly see how your career could develop over time and allows you to understand the attributes you need to display for your next career step. Underpinning the career structure are our grades (in career progression order):
- Consultant
- Senior Consultant
- Principal Consultant
- Senior Manager
- Executive Manager
- Director
At all stages of your career, your performance is regularly appraised through a formal review process. All promotions are based strictly on merit and will reflect your commercial, technical and managerial competence. Those with the necessary drive, commitment and ability will have the opportunity to reach the highest levels in the company. A career mentor is assigned to you before you join the company to give you career advice, help you navigate your career goals and objectives as well as undertaking the appraisals.
Training
We are committed to ongoing staff development and training. On-the-job training to acquire skills and necessary knowledge, and structured training courses will be a regular feature of your working life.
Right from the word go you will be given the training to perform to the best of your ability. Our induction program is an intense five-day course (some of which is residential) and is designed to give you the background, understanding and tools to hit the ground running.
Thereafter, our training program will help you establish the technical, commercial and managerial competencies you will need as you take on greater responsibility. Some of these courses have been developed in-house and are given by our own people, meaning they are tailored to our particular requirements. Other courses are given by external providers but are tailored from our own experiences and emphasize the way we do things.
Should you wish to gain further formal qualifications recognised as benefiting both yourself and the company, we will consider providing support.
Personal development
Although much of your time is likely to be spent working on projects, there are a range of activities that you are encouraged to take part in to add to your experience and develop your career in other ways.
Recruiting is vital for our continued growth and we encourage people to take part from an early stage in their career. This includes representing Detica at graduate recruitment events, interviewing candidates and participating in hiring decisions.
Even before someone joins the company a career mentor is assigned to them to help look after their general welfare, help guide their career development and undertake performance reviews. Usually once you have reached Principal Consultant grade we encourage you to consider becoming a career mentor.
There are a number of other activities which you may get involved in during your time with us. These include writing proposals to win new work, developing our competencies and participating in working groups to help us continually improve the way we work.
Reward
We offer rewards commensurate with ability, and recognise greater responsibility and competence through regular salary reviews.
All employees receive core benefits, for example 25 days annual leave (with the option to buy or sell days from August 2007). An allowance is also received to spend on your choice from a range of flexible benefits:
- pension plan
- private medical insurance
- life assurance
- permanent health insurance
As you are promoted you will benefit from additional benefits or an increased flexible benefit allowance. Employees are also able to participate in an employee share purchase scheme.
