Improving management intelligence

Client name: A major international mobile network operator

The business challenge

The UK has one of the most competitive mobile network markets and our client has several million subscribers within it. As part of an ongoing strategy to further empower its employees, the company wanted to improve the quality of data available to the business for use in customer profitability analysis, segmentation, marketing, and for the reporting of key financial metrics such as customer numbers and revenue analysis. Our client wanted all staff to have the fastest possible access to the most accurate and up-to-date intelligence it could give them, whenever they needed it.

How we helped

We were brought on board by our client in a £multi-million technology project to give around 200 managers fast, reliable access to all information held about the organisation's UK subscribers. This encompassed an in-depth review of data quality issues, data analysis and reporting requirements, as well as systems design and change implementation.
Following three months of detailed data and system analysis, Detica built a number of bespoke data management applications. Based on market-leading technologies (Oracle, Informatica) and supported by detailed business processes, these applications facilitated the delivery of accurate, high quality business information about millions of customers including their product usage and associated revenue.
Once the quality of the content had been assured, we then built a series of information feeds to a number of departments from marketing and operations to finance. We also provided access to selected third parties such as the police to enable them to gain entry to the system for call tracing and other monitoring purposes.

Outcome and benefits

The Detica solution is now delivering significant benefits for the client, particularly in terms of time-saving for managers who need fast access to intelligence, underlining the power that really high-quality information can give to businesses in the form of a single, trusted source of intelligence. It provides much improved data quality for analysis - for example, accurate classification of products and matching them to corporate financial reporting categories. It has also delivered a resilient and robust system which flags data problems at an early stage, resulting in increased business confidence in the system.
The delivered solution will also play a key part in the mobile network operator's long-term competitive strategy, enabling it to monitor market needs in real time and react to changing trends or new customer demands ahead of the competition.
